About UV 1577 UV absorber CAS 147315-50-2 | Omnistab

UV 1577 (Omnistab) is a hydroxyphenyl triazine grade and acts as a UV absorber.

What is UV 1577 (Omnistab)?

Omnistab UV 1577, CAS 147315-50-2, is a hydroxyphenyl triazine UV absorber. It belongs to the triazine class of UV absorbers, which are known for their high thermal stability, low volatility and broad-spectrum UV absorption in the 280 - 400 nm range.

Compared to conventional benzotriazole UV absorbers, UV 1577 offers stronger UV absorption and stays stable at higher processing temperatures. It remains active during extrusion and injection moulding at temperatures well above 300°C, which makes it a good fit for engineering plastics that are processed at high temperatures.

Chemical structure of UV 1577 (CAS 147315-50-2), showing the hydroxyphenyl triazine backbone with a hexyloxy substituent and two phenyl groups attached to the triazine ring.

What are the properties of UV 1577?

Omnistab UV 1577 is a light yellow powder with a melting point of 148 - 149°C. It has very low volatility: thermogravimetric analysis shows a weight loss of only 1% at 300°C and 5% at 335°C. This means the additive stays active during high-temperature polymer processing without significant loss during production.

The product has minimal absorption in the visible region above 400 nm, which means it does not affect the colour or transparency of the end product. This is particularly important for transparent or light-coloured materials such as polycarbonate sheets, optical films and clear packaging. UV 1577 has a very low tendency to chelate, which means it can be used in polymer formulations that contain catalyst residues without interference.

Which polymers is UV 1577 used in?

Omnistab UV 1577 is used in a range of engineering plastics and polymer systems where UV protection at high processing temperatures is needed. Typical applications include:

Polyalkylene terephthalates and naphthalates (PET, PBT, PEN), polycarbonate (PC), modified polyphenylene ether (PPE), polyamide (PA), PMMA, SAN, ASA and polyolefins.

It is also used in polymer blends and alloys such as PC/ABS, PC/PBT and PPE/PA, as well as in reinforced, filled and flame-retarded compounds. These can be transparent, translucent or pigmented.

This stabiliser is particularly well suited for applications where a combination of high UV absorption, low volatility and good compatibility is needed in a single additive: complex moulded parts, flat sheets, films, co-extruded and co-injected semi-finished products.

Guidelines for use

UV 1577 can be incorporated into the polymer at a loading of 0.2–6% by weight using standard processing techniques such as powder blending, solution blending or melt blending. It can be used as a standalone UV absorber or in combination with HALS and antioxidants. Combinations with other stabilisers often show a synergistic effect, providing more complete protection than this triazine UV absorber alone. Frequently asked questions

Is UV 1577 the same as Tinuvin 1577?

Yes. UV 1577 and Tinuvin 1577 are different trade names for the same compound with CAS number 147315-50-2. Omnistab UV 1577 is Partners in Chemicals' trade name for this product.

What is the difference between UV 1577 and benzotriazole UV absorbers?

UV 1577 belongs to the hydroxyphenyl triazine class, which offers higher thermal stability and lower volatility than most benzotriazole UV absorbers. It stays active at processing temperatures above 300°C, where some benzotriazoles begin to degrade or volatilise.

Which polymers is UV 1577 used in?

UV 1577 is used in polycarbonate, PET, PBT, polyamide, PMMA, SAN, ASA, polyolefins and polymer blends such as PC/ABS and PC/PBT. It works well in both transparent and pigmented systems.

Can UV 1577 be combined with HALS?

Yes. UV 1577 can be used in combination with HALS and antioxidants. Combinations often show a synergistic effect, offering more complete protection than UV 1577 alone.

Is UV 1577 approved for food contact applications?

Yes. UV 1577 is approved in many countries for use in food contact applications and is listed on multiple chemical inventories including TSCA, EINECS, DSL and AICS.
