High performance light stabilizer for coatings

In this article we highlight the performances of our Omnistab LS 123. This product is a liquid hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) of amino ethers. Hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) products deactivate free radicals created by reactions with UV light.

It provides outstanding light stability in coatings and has a low alkalinity. The burnish and degradation disappear, so it can avoid reaction with the acid composition in coatings.

And it also prevent colored paint from pulverization. Due to the liquid form, the Omnistab LS 123 is suitable for both waterborne and solvent based coatings.

What are Light Stabilizers?

Light stabilizers are used to protect plastics and other materials against UV radiation which causes light induced degradation, polymer degradation or plastic degradation (depending on the material).

If the plastic, polymer or any other material is exposed to the UV radiation (from sunlight), the degradation will start through a photo-oxidative process.

This can produce some undesirable effects including changes in appearance (discoloration, changes in gloss, and/or chalking), deterioration of mechanical properties, and the formation of visible defects such as cracks.

These problems don’t only occur under sunlight. Fluorescent lamps used for indoor lighting also emit UV radiation, but at a much lower intensity than sunlight.

Just like thermal oxidation, photo-oxidation is a chain reaction process involving free radical and hydroperoxide intermediates. Light stabilizers will help this process slow down by taking down the reactive intermediates or by absorbing the damaging UV radiation.

Hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS)

A Hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) will mainly take down the reactive intermediates in the photo-oxidation process. Hindered amine light stabilizers are very effective for the light stabilization of polyolefins, styrenic polymers, and some engineering plastics.

Ultraviolet (UV) absorbers act by shielding the interior of plastic parts from damaging UV radiation. These products are characterized by a very strong UV absorbance and a high degree of inherent photostability.

Combinations of Hindered amine light stabilizers and UV absorbers often show a synergistic performance superior to either type of light stabilizer used alone.


Its excellent performance reflect in the following applications:

  • Alkyd resin / acrylate air-dry automobile repair paint
  • Oxidized alkyd paints and varnishes
  • Two-component non-isocyanate coating
  • It is easy to emulsify in the water-based coating system and can also be used in water-based coatings
  • Synergistic performance with other Light Stabilizers & Hindered amine light stabilizers & UV absorbers


Recommended industries for the high performance light stabilizer: automotive coatings, industrial coatings, decorative coatings, wood coatings and varnishes. \

Especially the ones with high solid content and acid-catalyzed; such as double-coated metal thermosetting acrylic systems or single-layer thermosetting acrylic varnish and polyester systems.

Recommended combinations

For more comprehensive protection we recommend to combine the light stabilizer with an ultraviolet absorber.

For automotive coatings, the combination of Omnistab LS 123 with one of the following absorbers can significantly improve the weather resistance: Omnistab UV 384-2, Omnistab UV 1130, Omnistab UV 928 or Omnistab UV 400. It effectively prevent gloss loss, cracking, color change, bubbles and delamination.

In double coating systems, most manufactures use HALS in primers and topcoats. For wood coating, the combination of Omnistab LS 123 and Omnistab UV 384-2 or Omnistab UV 1130 has a good protective effect on air-dry alkyd paint material. HALS mixtures commonly added to the film and decorative paints.

Recommended dosage

Automotive paint and industrial paint: 0.5-2.0%* Omnistab LS 123 + 1.0-3.0% Omnistab UV 1130 / UV 384-2 /UV 928 / UV 400
Decorative coating and wood coating: 0.5-2.0%* Omnistab LS 123 (use alone) or + 1.0-3.0% Omnistab UV 1130 / UV 384-2
